XII monitors. Ser. No 28231 & 18831. Listed in Carson, CA. The kid I got them from sold them to me cheap, made me promise to take extra special care of them. He had gotten them from a gentleman that had swore him to a dutiful oath also. The aforementioned gentleman was an employee or part owner of the company, and this pair apparently had been an experimental pair , not really sure in what capacity they were ‘experimental’ but I know these speakers are absolutely my favorite for any kinda rock n roll, but they need a pretty good size receiver to open up. I run mine currently on a Nikko ALPHA II with a beta II preamp. I have yet to manage to over power these speakers…they’ll take all I can give them with the Nikko. ( 120 wpc rms with like .08% total distortion at 75% .. just keep playing louder and louder. 12” , 4”, 1”. But they sound phenomenal under the Nikko, and almost as good on my realistic as-2600. Great fun and picked up for very little. Feels a much better balanced system for switching them in, even if it loses some treble detail. It essentially has all the driver compo-
nents of the $4500/pair Matrix 802 – the
metal dome tweeter, the Kevlar mid-range,
and two Cobex diaphragm woofers mount-
ed in a lower cost but much larger volume
cabinet at one-third the price of the 802,
just $1500/pair list. Only the free air mount-
ing of the tweeter and the fancy real wood
finish are missing. Unfortunately, B&W
made a compromised design judgement in
our opinion regarding the overall sonic
balance of the speaker. While we have
never liked the Matrix 802 because it had
too little bass response (too small a woofer
cabinet for its price range), the DM640 has
the opposite problem - too much bass." These are great speakers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7860573417781989448.post-45932005723991895492023-04-14T00:27:11.891-07:002023-04-14T00:27:11.891-07:00Look! And I can see how a lot of folks would not like it. But I think this is where a certain level of maturity comes in handy. I mean, I would not want to be limited to this 1960s multi-driver sound. On other other hand, every so often I want to be able to hook up a class a single ended tube amp with about 6 watts per and rock out. And these are exactly the speakers to do it. The sound is very detailed, textured. Each instrument distinct. No really deep bass. Sound is not particularly accurate. Who cares? I can always hook up my Thiels or Apogee or whatever. But none of them can do what the SP-3500 does. And these Corals are probably similar. It is interesting to me that ever since the 1950s we have had single driver fans, coaxial fans, hogwild multiplr driver fans, point source fans, open baffle fans, acoustic suspension fans, and so on. Variety really is the spice of life. And it's all about FUN and curiocity. So these Corals DO tempt me. (By the way the reason they sound bad is usually because they are being overdriven by shreachy transistor amps rather than sweettalked by warm friendly valves.)Mitch Leehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06845012271207424315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7860573417781989448.post-73776189734219334092023-02-14T15:15:08.791-08:002023-02-14T15:15:08.791-08:00just recently got a dual 1237 base was dirty it l...just recently got a dual 1237 base was dirty it looked like it was stored and barely used was told it came from an estate sale and seller said it turned on but that was it do not know why i bid for it it looked unique compared to my other TT.s all idler drive i was never a fan of belt drive why i wanted it not even I can excplain but when i got it it was in great condition the base was plastic with a wood surround the cover really scratched badly but as i went to clean up and oil the mechanics there was very little grease compared to my dual 1009sk not many linkages to see but it was an automatic so it came with a shure 91ed which i happen to have a extra stylus set evrything up tried it was blown away how smooth this worked ,it was quiet very quiet it worked perfectly on both speeds was quiet when playing records and as a stacker it was perfect it dropped record very, very quietly .speed stay steady for a belt drive i was surprised ,then i cleaned up base and repolished the smoked dust cover it looks fantastic i am impressed with this TT ,been using stackers to prove that they do not scratch records and this one dropped them so quietly that so far true to fdorm no records scratched on my other TT's or on the 1237 JRonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7860573417781989448.post-60522173807179341342023-02-06T02:11:10.858-08:002023-02-06T02:11:10.858-08:00I know this is an old post, but... Pushed with a 270 wpc McIntosh 7270 in a large, open room with 29' ceilings, the Polks had powerful bass and a wonderful sound. I listened to all sorts of music and, often, so did my neighbors. Those smaller, multiple drivers created bass that hit, not just rumbled. If you want rumble, go buy an old pair of Cerwin Vega 15" woofer cabinets.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7860573417781989448.post-20852639168233785102023-01-24T03:48:09.207-08:002023-01-24T03:48:09.207-08:00Look for IMF TLs 50 or 80 speakersLook for IMF TLs 50 or 80 speakersAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7860573417781989448.post-68111572133738886542023-01-18T16:19:07.750-08:002023-01-18T16:19:07.750-08:00Loving this thread!
