<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Although not vintage, the <a href="https://www.klipsch.com/products/rp-600m-bookshelf-speaker" target="_blank">Klipsch RP 600M</a> speakers have a classic appeal and look great alongside the <a href="https://hificollector.blogspot.com/2012/01/update-tube-integrated-amplifier-yaqin.html" target="_blank">Yaqin MC-10L EL34</a> tube amplifier. I have this system fed through a <a href="https://www.audioquest.com/dacs/dragonfly/dragonfly-black" target="_blank">AudioQuest DragonFly</a> DAC hooked up to my computer as well as an older iPod. Still breaking the speakers in, but they sound very nice. It's a great system to glance over and admire while working from home these days. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This lovely Pioneer has been sitting on a shelf for over two years, covered, of course, with only the finest Peruvian Llama fleece and kept temperature controlled and humidity free. You'd have to see my storage unit to fully appreciate the sarcasm here. At any rate, I had stowed it away because it had some sort of problem, but, after playing continually for two days straight, I haven't been able to duplicate any of its ailments. Quite honestly, I don't remember what the problem(s) were, so perhaps I'm speaking prematurely.... </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">At a modest 65 watts per channel, this 1976 beauty outputs clean, natural sound. All dial and indicator lights are working, which is a rarity for gear this old. The cabinet is in exceptional condition. I'll try a turntable and the tuner later this week, as time permits. Keep an eye open for an update. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Grabbed this Sony TA-5650 from the front lawn of a neighbor during a yard sale. Watch the video to hear what I paid for it. Great-sounding unit, especially for a 45 year old amp. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My Thorens TD-160 got a brand new, reproduction dust cover today. There's a nice gentleman in Torrance, CA who makes these and sells on CraigsList for $100, which I think is a fair price for a clear acrylic, well-fitting dust cover. The cartridge is a Shure V15 Type II and the stylus is a Shure VN-7, both have only a few hours of use - were bought as NOS off eBay by the previous owner this past summer. </span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>How does it sound?</b> It sounds right. Meaning, when I take into account the system into which it's integrated and the room in which it's playing, it sounds the way I would expect it to sound. I'm not being intentionally obtuse - it's just that by me saying it sounds "great" I'm simply describing a subjective, non-referenced opinion that really means nothing to the reader. I can tell you that it sounds better than my other turntable hooked to the same, Sansui AU-717 integrated amplifier. It sounds better than the AR-XA turntable I had up in the listening space a few weeks ago... at least I think it does. It sounds different than MP3 files through the same amp or FLAC files. But yes, if you must hear these words, it sounds great! And it really, really does. :)</span></div>

Unfortunately, I'll have to replace the cloth, as it was so brittle, it tore in a couple of places around the edge while removing the grills. I am purchasing 18-count ivory-colored linen off eBay as a substitute for the Irish linen that AR used on these grills. The Irish linen in this thread count is no longer available. </div>

According to the original owner, the grills were never removed, and the drivers show no impact-damage from shipping or grill-bump of any kind. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The early, Alnico magnet version of the AR3A used cloth surrounds. Later versions used Urethane and foam surrounds that deteriorated over time.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I received a pair of Acoustic Research AR3A speakers from the original owner, who is a reader of this blog. The tone controls in the back of each speaker need repair/replacement, and the crossovers will likely need new capacitors and/or resistors as, after 45 years, they have no-doubt drifted wildly out of spec. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The cabinets are pristine, and the drivers look fine. I'm taking them to <a href="http://www.speakerrepair.com/" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">Orange County Speaker</span></b></a> this week and leaving them there so they can test them out and work on them. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'll create another post with information and pics as I move forward with this project. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Ever own a pair of AR3 or AR3A speakers? Have something to contribute? Please leave a comment below. Thanks!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hi,</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I noticed your webpage and thought I would share the story of my HiFi console.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My great grandfather served in WWII and when he was released, he went into coal mining. He worked very </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">hard for everything he owned and was very proud of a lot of his purchases. He always wanted high </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">quality and so he would only drive Cadillacs and only buy what he thought was the best of the best.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">September 11, 1963, he purchased his HiFi console new from Reichart Furniture Company in downtown </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Wheeling, WV. This console is a Curtis Mathes Royal Dane model 930C. He really loved this console and </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">would use it constantly over the years. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He passed away in the winter of 1988, but my great grandmother and grandmother wanted this console to </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">remain in their possession and continue to play it these years later in remembrance of him.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This past January my grandmother passed away and being the last member of the house, my family decided </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">to sell the property. I took possession of the Royal Dane and continue to use it regularly. It sounds </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">gorgeous and has been well-maintained. I have yet to find a console of this era to match this </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">console's sound and performance and still functions perfectly over 50 years later.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have attached a couple of pictures of the Royal Dane and part of the original receipt of the </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">console.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Thanks!</span></div>
<div>

The compact, stylish design of these amps flies in the face of "bigger and better" amp designs of the early 1960s. STE didn't quote power specifications. Instead, they claimed their amps would deliver room-filling, clear sound. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Can't get much simpler than this.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCKsHUjNna99DvJK0wIKwr0JNTdyH72NFZRoFEOSp3OJArwvMmq1HKgA1fuO7HLkPtYJwcdtWnTF2gHYvnuRY2JdiObhSCJ9R8QfvgS1Q-KGnGQI66opZaChRGC7A8LXZtrvlF3yRtdSw/s1600/IMG_2634.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCKsHUjNna99DvJK0wIKwr0JNTdyH72NFZRoFEOSp3OJArwvMmq1HKgA1fuO7HLkPtYJwcdtWnTF2gHYvnuRY2JdiObhSCJ9R8QfvgS1Q-KGnGQI66opZaChRGC7A8LXZtrvlF3yRtdSw/s1600/IMG_2634.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Had to do some research on this one. STE - SouthEast Technical Enterprises manufactured stereo amplifiers in Clearwater, Florida in 1961 - 1963, possibly longer. These dual mono amplifiers were tied to a power source in a nice wooden cabinet. I picked this unit up at a flea market in Carpinteria, Ca, along with a Heathkit FM-4 tuner, which I'll get to in another post.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This had problems - power fluctuations caused uneven sound in both channels. I unplugged it and mothballed it for not. It's a unique piece, worth keeping around, but it won't be making music without some serious help. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
This is my Christmas present to myself. A friend called me two days ago and said he had an "old Pioneer amplifier" that he wanted to unload. As soon as I saw the picture he texted me, I realized I had to make the 25 mile drive to pick it up - quick!<br />
<br />
He inherited this from the original owner who bought it new in 1973. The heritage is exactly what one looks for when purchasing 40-year-old gear - one owner and well-appreciated. This shows virtually no signs of wear. The case and front panel are pristine. Took the knobs and switches off and electrostatically cleaned them using Simple Green as the solution. Wiped the cabinet down with furniture polish. Sprayed Caig tuner cleaner on all pots, switches and worked them well to help ensure static-free use.<br />
<br />
I'm sure the electrolytic caps are dried up, but these old Japanese units hold up really well. It still sounds nice. This could be a candidate for full reconditioning. Stay tuned.<br />

<br />
Hi folks, Tom here. Are you looking for an alternative to eBay and Craigslist? Maybe an online marketplace that caters <b>exclusively </b>to vintage stereos?<br />
<br />
I'm creating one and it's launching soon!<br />
<br />
If you want to be part of the launch announcement email blast, please shoot me an <a href="mailto:hificollector88@gmail.com" target="_blank">email</a>: hificollector88 [at] gmail dot com<br />
<br />
This is going to be something you can all use and I can promise it will be an easy-to-use and VERY reasonably-priced alternative to whatever online source you're using now to buy and sell your gear.<br />
<br />
Exciting times, my fiends. Shoot me an email and I won't spam you or sell, loan, or misuse your email address in any way. I'll just shoot you a message when the new site is up and ready to use.<br />
<br />
Thanks for all your support. I look forward to starting this new venture and seeing how it helps HiFiCollector.com grow in new directions as well.<br />
<br />
