Monster Receiver - Yamaha CR-2040

Another photo sent in by a new member to our HiFiCollector.com community. With 120 watts per channel, this Yamaha CR-2040 qualifies as a monster. I didn't get a chance to listen to this, but the person sending it in said it sounds great - no surprises there. I may have given Yamaha receivers luke-warm reviews in the past, but this just further illustrates that beautiful sound is in the ear of the beholder. One thing for sure, these sure are great-looking units. Note the soft green meter lights. . .something only a true audio geek could appreciate.

How about you? If you have any photos, stories, or personal takes on your Yamaha receiver or the Yamaha CR-2040 in particular, leave a comment, or send me an email.

  1. I have a CR 2040 in good condition - one or two small nicks on cabinei and a snall chip bottom rear of cabinet - all nobs and buttons seems to work fine.
Is it worth taking pics and trying to sell - what could I expect to get?
    Thanks,

  3. Ron- I prefer giving quotes privately over email, but since you didn't know that - here's my estimate. Considering condition, and if ALL dial and indicator lights/lamps work: $150. In mint condition this could fetch $250 on eBay, but it sounds like it may not be collector fodder. Hope this helps.

  4. I'VE HAD ONE SINCE IT WAS NEW AND IT STILL BLOWS ME AWAY WITH ITS POWER AND SOUND. ITS THE ONLY STEREO RECEIVER I KNOW OF THAT HAS TWO SOURCE CONTROLS SO YOU CAN DO TWO DIFFERENT FUNCTION AT THE SAME TIME. ITS HARD TO MOVE,

  5. I was fortunate enough to acquire one from a neighbor who upgraded to tube equip. and it is flawless. I also have a fully restored Sansui 9090db and I prefer the sound of the Yamaha.

  7. I prefer 2020, the elder sister is somewat more beautiful: nicer knobs, more stylish tuner lever etc.

the aesthetics of the team is the best of its time in sound, not even listen to a receiver like this
