Speakers - Sansui SP-200

Yet another "speaker identification" post. The SP-100 and SP-200 were from the first generation of Sansui speakers, in 1966. This one too is in very nice shape for its age. Look at the size of the port!

How does it sound? I just snapped a pic on this one - didn't hook it up, sorry.

If you have any photos or stories about your Sansui SP-200, please leave a comment or email me.

  1. My brother has the too. Four of them and they sounded great! Wish I had 2 more.

  2. I've gotten a pair of used SP-100 since 2011 from a fellow and the SP-200 since 2018 from eBay.

I like their sound a lot. But 50 years on, most of them have developed non-working tweeters. It is easy to repair them by step-by-step disassembly, and then the voice coil complete with unattached connecting wires can be separated. Good ones should measure 12.5 ohm on DC volt metres.

These tweeters have very low mass and thus sound very good, although even double in quantity, they always measure -6dB lower than the average outputs from 10k Hz upwards (these x-over at 5kHz from the squawkers).

So, adding a super tweeter working from 10kHz will help taking their sound SP100 and SP200 upwards in transparency and speed.

I just use them in my active x-over set-up, meaning I add two 15" JBL subwoofers to them in Model 4320 monitors. That way ..... wowowowowowowowow .......... Doesn't it sound like magic.

I prefer them to my Celestion SL-700 and Pioneer CS-99, and my Tannoy LZ III 10" Gold Monitor loses out in clarity and speed to the SP-200 with recapped x-over.
