Speakers - Sansui SP-70

Ahhh. . .a Sansui with only two drivers and a 1" soft dome tweeter at that! These were nice-sounding, unassuming little gems that somehow got buried in the multiple driver mayhem of the mid-70s Sansui megalo-driver lineup. My friend had these playing in his den, hooked up to a Sansui 5000 receiver from the same era. I remember being impressed by how great these mid-sized speakers sounded and how much bass was ported out from an 8" woofer. Nice cabinets too, although it looks like grills hadn't been removed for 20 years. Nice beer stain too :)

Sansui really paid attention to design detail in the mid-70s. Most major players did, and it was sad to see most of this detail disappear as the decade rolled into the 80's. But if you look around, you can still find these artifacts from the days before mass-market audio took over. As a collector, the thrill of the hunt is just as exciting as owning the gear.

If you have any photos or stories about your Sansui SP-70 speakers, please leave a comment or email me.

  1. Yup i was about six ,when my dad had these along with a sansui au-101 amp and a sansui phono player .I still have these speakers but had to revynil them as the wood grain was exposed to high humidity in the tropics. They sounded really great even with other amps too.
The speakers are kind frailed out now and makes me think if i should keep them any longer.
Anyway i attribute these speakers for inspiring me to be an audio engineer eventually...linusfrancis@gmail.com

  2. I just picked up a pair of these today for $40 off CL- and boy what an upgrade from the B&W 600 series bookshelf speakers I had previously been using! I am running them with a JVC A-X3 Integrated Amp, and a JVC QL-Y5F turntable. Quite like the turntable- but I think I'll be upgrading the amp before too long. Speakers Rock! They appear to be in similar condition to the one's you've pictured above.

  3. I have a set of Sansui SP 70 Speakers and a Pioneer SX434 Receiver that I would like to sell. These items were purchased in the early 70's while stationed in Turkey.

  4. I recently got a pair of these. Sound great other than the tweeter in one of them periodically cuts out, sometimes it stays off for a good while actually. Any ideas on how to fix this? Or maybe if anyone knows whether i could replace it with a more modern substitute? Any ideas would be much appreciated.. It sounds like some dodgey connection, but I'm no expert and don't really know..
